providing an objective, unbiased evaluation that helps identify gaps, inefficiencies, or non-compliance that internal teams may overlook due to familiarity or internal pressures. External auditors bring specialized expertise, industry benchmarks, and fresh perspectives that can improve operational integrity, ensure adherence to legal and safety standards, and enhance overall system performance. Their findings can validate current practices, support continuous improvement, and strengthen stakeholder confidence by demonstrating a commitment to transparency, accountability, and best practice.

Professional support

They can also assist with functional assessments, stakeholder communication, documentation, and early intervention strategies. Fitness for work

Protect Your Employees and Your Business with TrueNorth Injury Management

A Fitness for Work (FFW) Program is a proactive health and safety initiative designed to ensure employees are in a physical, psychological, and functional state to safely perform their job tasks. In high-risk industries such as mining, oil & gas, and heavy industry, FFW programs reduce workplace incidents, improve productivity, and support compliance with regulatory and duty-of-care obligations.

Key Drivers for Implementation

A. Safety and Risk Mitigation

  • Unfit workers pose a significant safety risk to themselves, co-workers, and operations.

  • Fatigue, illness, injury, psychological stress, and substance use are leading contributors to workplace incidents.

  • FFW assessments identify these risks early and ensure controls are in place to prevent harm.

B. Legal and Regulatory Compliance

  • The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 imposes a duty of care on employers to provide a safe workplace.

  • Employers must ensure that workers are not impaired or otherwise unfit to perform their duties.

  • A documented FFW program supports compliance and demonstrates due diligence in the event of an incident or investigation.

C. Reduced Lost-Time Injuries (LTIs) and Absenteeism

  • Early identification of underlying health or psychosocial issues enables timely support and intervention.

  • Workers who are supported early are more likely to recover faster and avoid long-term absence.

  • Reducing LTIs improves workforce stability and reduces insurance premiums and injury claim costs.

D. Improved Productivity and Workforce Reliability

  • A workforce that is physically and mentally ready for work performs better, with fewer errors and disruptions.

  • FFW initiatives improve team morale, reduce presenteeism, and improve worker retention.

Program Components

A comprehensive Fitness for Work Program may include:

  • Pre-employment medicals & functional assessments

  • Fatigue risk management protocols

  • Drug & alcohol screening

  • Mental health and wellbeing support

  • Return to work fitness and clearance assessments

  • Job task analysis and matching capabilities to roles

  • Workplace education on sleep, injury prevention, and self-care

Financial Justification

Cost Factor Estimated Annual Impact (1 Worker) Worker salary (absent 6 months @ $160K/year) $80,000 Backfill with short-term contractor $90,000–$120,000 Onboarding/Induction training (new worker) $5,000–$10,000 Loss of productivity/errors $10,000–$30,000 Increased insurance premiums (claims) Variable, but can exceed $20,000 Total Potential Cost Per Worker $185,000–$260,000+

By comparison, a well-run FFW program might, depending on its scope, offset the savings from even a single prevented injury or reduced claim.

Organizational Benefits

  • Proactive risk management

  • Reduced exposure to litigation and prosecution

  • Enhanced safety culture and employee engagement

  • Stronger insurer and regulator relationships

  • Positive return on investment (ROI) through retained productivity and reduced claims

Alignment with Business Strategy

Implementing a FFW program aligns with broader safety, HR, and operational goals by:

  • Supporting sustainable workforce planning

  • Enhancing the company’s reputation as a responsible employer

  • Demonstrating leadership in safety and injury management
